A civil jury awarded $3 million on Monday to two families who sued a liquor store that provided alcohol to an underage driver in 2001, leading to the deaths of two Englewood High School students.

However, because of state law, the damages were capped at $219,750 for each family.

"I asked the jury for $1.5 million, and that's what they did," said attorney Ron Podboy, who represented the family of Nicole Scott, 15, who was killed.

    * A story on Page 22A Friday should have said that Warehouse Liquor Mart, which was cited by a jury for providing alcohol to minors three years ago, is no longer in business in the 3300 block of West Hampden Avenue. The new store at that location, Hampden Warehouse Liquors, was not involved in the lawsuit. Also, the story misspelled the name of attorney Ron Podboy.
